When the attempt to translate something into sound and meaning fails or is only partially successful, it is usually called 'illegible'. It can be frustrating to be confronted with indecipherable graphisms or potentially crackable codes, defaced writing or text that remains incomprehensible. But it can also prove highly productive, for it is precisely the unfulfilled expectation of legibility that enables new ways of thinking about reading itself. Illegibilities Reflecting Reading sounds out reading as an aesthetic, semiotic and epistemic practice by focusing on its limits. By engaging with experiences of illegibility, the essays in this volume reflect on reading, for example, as an interaction between body and artefact, as an exercise in attention, as a dominant mode in Western knowledge cultures, or as a metaphor for understanding the world.

‚Unlesbar‘ heißt etwas dann, wenn seine Übersetzung in Klang und Bedeutung nicht oder nur partiell gelingen will. Die Konfrontation mit unentzifferbaren Graphismen oder potentiell entschlüsselbaren Codes, mit unleserlicher Schrift oder unverständlich bleibendem Text ist meist frustrierend. Sie kann aber auch äußerst produktiv werden, denn gerade die enttäuschte Erwartung der Lesbarkeit ermöglicht ein neues Nachdenken über das Lesen selbst. Illegibilities Reflecting Reading nimmt das Lesen als ästhetische, semiotische und epistemische Praxis daher von seiner absoluten Grenze her in den Blick. Je ausgehend von einer spezifischen Unlesbarkeitserfahrung reflektieren die im Band versammelten Essays das Lesen zum Beispiel als Interaktion zwischen Körper und Artefakt, als Übung der Aufmerksamkeit, als dominanten Modus in westlichen Wissenskulturen oder als Metapher für das Verstehen von Welt

The series is a project of the eponymous hub for collaborative, networked and transdisciplinary projects conceived within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence 2020 Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective at Freie Universität Berlin. The hub CONSTELLATIONS brings together academic and artistic perspectives and reaches beyond the university. The formats developed involve collaborations with research environments and cultural institutions such as museums, theatres, archives and libraries.
